First Watch Trinity Biscuits and Gravy

For our first ever Blogscuits and Gravy post, we present a pre- farmers market/Mombirthday celebration breakfast at one of our favorite Florida chain restaurants: First Watch.

The long awaited "Florida Fall" has finally arrived- a week or two of nice (read: bearable) weather before it goes right back to being summer until Thanksgiving. T and G decided to take advantage of the temporarily non-sweltering weather to finally visit the Keystone Farmers Market, a little farm in Odessa we have literally been driving past for over two years and have never been able to stop by. We thought it would be fun to invite my mom and go to breakfast beforehand since it was almost her birthday.

The place:

First Watch Trinity- New Port Richey, Florida.

According to Wikipedia, First Watch was founded in 1983 in California, but moved their headquarters to Bradenton, FL in 1986. They currently have 500 locations in 29 states.

Although we shop in this plaza very frequently (hello Sprouts! 💚), none of us had ever been to this First Watch in Mitchell Ranch. It was different from most of the First Watch locations I've ever been to: it had a very open concept with a limited number of booths, but even at 9 AM (Thursday) it was not crowded and had plenty of parking and seating.

We chose First Watch for our Farmers Market day even though we've been there many times because they have a lot of healthy options for people like me (vegetarian, lactose intolerant, food sensitivities, etc). I didn't have to worry that I'd be eating just toast and home fries for breakfast to avoid digestion issues and at First Watch there are actually plenty of options for me to choose from. Plus they have mimosas!

The menu:

While mom ordered a Belgian waffle and I got the avocado toast with seasoned potatoes (sans eggs), T of course, ordered her Biscuits and Gravy.

I also ordered a Spiked Lavender Lemonade and T got a Mint Mocha Iced Coffee.

The verdict:

This biscuits and gravy dish was different than the norm because it was made with turkey sausage gravy instead of regular sausage. T thought the turkey gravy was interesting. My mom asked her if it tasted like Thanksgiving and she said no, but it definitely had a lot of flavor that was different from the usual B&G she gets at other restaurants. She usually doesn't love regular sausage gravy and it gives her a stomachache (we are suspicious of a pork sensitivity) but she said this gravy was really good.

The biscuits here were not T's favorite. She said they were a bit chewy and kind of flat. This led to a discussion between the three of us about baking and how there are a lot of things you can do differently when making biscuits that could cause them to turn out like that. (My mom and I have always been into baking.) The biscuits weren't necessarily bad, but just not the airy and flakey consistency T prefers in her B&G.

Overall, T rated her First Watch Biscuits and Turkey Sausage Gravy as a 7/10.

Other thoughts:

My mom loved her waffle and as always my avocado toast and potatoes were amazing. First Watch has the best potatoes. My spiked lemonade was cute and delicious and the perfect amount. T enjoyed her coffee but there were a lot of chocolate chips at the bottom that she couldn't reach. ðŸ¥²

Our service was great, the food came quickly, and the bathrooms were very clean. They had three or four separate unisex bathrooms instead of larger men's and women's bathrooms which was fine for us but during busy times I can imagine there possibly being a line for the bathroom. My mom also said her water faucet wouldn't turn on (we don't do well with automatic faucets 😂).

I discovered that First Watch has a veggie burger I want to try so I'm hoping next time we go there it will be to try lunch for the first time. First Watch is always a favorite with my family because their food is dependable and there are so many healthy choices.
